Professional Development

The key to ensuring the growth of high quality music education in Los Angeles schools

All of our music teachers receive over 100 hours of professional development every year... and it doesn't stop there.

Schools are facing a shortage of qualified music teachers. In filling this gap, ETM-LA has found that many qualified musicians, instructors, and professionals are interested in teaching music in public schools but need the opportunity, training, and support to navigate the process of becoming certified teachers. Going beyond pairing qualified teachers with schools, ETM-LA knows that building and sustaining a high quality music program takes buy-in from school leadership, districts, and the parents & community. ETM-LA considers the full picture, and provides resources and training across the school ecosystem to ensure lasting support for music programs.

Our Comprehensive Approach to Sustainable Music

Music Educators

Innovative and first-rate support and training produces high-quality music teachers.

Principals & Districts

Strong principal leadership supports sustainable, comprehensive music education.

Parents & School Communities

Engaged and supportive parents build strong and thriving school communities.

Music Teacher Training & Development

Every teacher and intern is matched with a mentor to provide ongoing support and coaching. Music Teacher Mentors and Instructional Supervisors provide on-site modeling, observation, and lesson plan review. Feedback is customized to each teacher’s situation, strengths, and growth areas.

In addition to this personalized guidance, teachers and interns attend four training “academies” during the year. These workshops emphasize a student-centered approach and cover an extensive variety of topics such as: social emotional learning, benchmark-driven lesson planning, culturally responsive teaching, and much more.

Principal's Leadership Conference

Once a year, we welcome School Principals, District Leaders, Parents, Arts & Community Members, Development Staff, and SoCal-based Arts Advocates to join us at the Principal’s Leadership Conference, an exciting day of strategic planning, roundtable discourse, and leadership collaboration, guided by ETM-LA leadership and guest Experts, resulting in a tailored action plan that is relevant and ready to use.

Parent & Community Workshops

Parent and community members are vital to the success of their music and arts programs. Through collaborative planning meetings, active discussion, interactive workshops, and ongoing engagement, parents and community members develop tools and resources to galvanize support for their programs.
