Yes. ETM provides ongoing training and professional development to ETM Music Teachers and to school-employed music teachers.

Before each school year, we host ETM Academy, an intensive clinic covering topics such as classroom management, lesson planning, assessment, integration, and other concepts and strategies that supply teachers with the tools needed for success.

Throughout the school year, we provide workshops in both small and large group settings to reinforce training and introduce other topics. For example, workshops have covered choral conducting techniques, body percussion, and incorporating the use of Orff instruments. We also provide ongoing mentoring and coaching throughout the year.

Yes, ETM Music Teachers are employees of ETM, not consultants. Full-time teachers receive employee benefits, such as:

  • 12-month (year-round) payroll
  • Paid time off- Sick days, personal days, school holidays and breaks, including summer break
  • Employer-subsidized health insurance (Oxford/UnitedHealthcare) and employer-sponsored Health Reimbursement Account (currently up to $5,000/yr.)
  • Teaching certification assistance

As an employee, taxes, social security, etc., are withheld as directed by law.

Our basic qualifications for becoming a music teacher with ETM include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a Music/Arts or Related Field 
  • 1-3 years of teaching groups of up to 30 children
  • Ability to model quality singing in front of children
  • Sound musical knowledge
  • Knowledge of musical pedagogy practices

Also, Individuals who do not currently hold ‘eligible’ status for classroom teaching from the NYC Department of Education (DOE) will be asked to undergo a fingerprinting and background check by the NYC DOE PETS system. Only those cleared by the DOE who receive ‘eligible’ status are eligible for hire by ETM.

Yes! Our ultimate goal is to build sustainability in each of our partnerships and work towards getting ETM teachers hired directly by the principals of the schools they are placed in. Since 2011, nearly 80 ETM Teachers have been hired by the NYC Department of Education, and we have maintained long-lasting relationships with our alumni.Â
