Education Through Music announced today that Olle Liljelund, a junior at the Hudson High School of Learning Technologies, has been named the winner of ETM’s first-ever High School Student Composition Contest! Olle has been an avid fan of music his whole life, and plays guitar and piano. The opportunity to compose music in ETM’s music technology class, he says, opened up new possibilities to explore musical concepts and express himself creatively. Brooklyn native Alfredo Hernandez is awarded the ETM 2023 music teacher of the year

Education Through Music announced today that Alfredo Hernandez, a music teacher at All Hallows High School in the Bronx, has been named the 2023 ETM Music Teacher of the Year! Mr. Hernandez works at All Hallows High School through their partnership with ETM. All Hallows High School did not have a music teacher for several decades until they partnered with ETM. Mr. Hernandez joined the school in 2021 and quickly built a comprehensive music program impacting all students. Mr. Hernandez serves as the All Hallows’ Music Technology teacher as well as the Director of the All Hallows’ Modern Band. Through the music programs that he created, Mr. Hernandez has taught students who have never played an instrument, and he has inspired them to find their musical talents.

This month we caught up with Emily Roman, who has been involved with Education Through Music for over 10 years. When Emily moved to New York City, she found ETM and started teaching general music and choir at P.S. 76 in the Bronx. STUDENTS FROM PARtner school P.S. 125 PERFORM AT THE APOLLO THEATER

On December 1, 2022, The Ralph Bunche choir from ETM partner school P.S. 125 in Harlem was invited by Mastercard to perform at the Apollo Theater for the exclusive Netflix film screening of Descendant, a documentary that follows descendants of the survivors from the Clotilda, the last ship that carried enslaved Africans to the United States, as they reclaim their story.
In preparation for the event, the school held a special dress rehearsal for students, families, and community members to attend and share in the excitement of their upcoming performance.

One challenge? Until recently, their household only had one device, leaving Nicole and Evan to negotiate sharing a device, among other inconveniences brought on by this shift to learning at home. (They just received a new iPad from the DOE, so Evan has a dedicated device, now.)
