Education Through Music (ETM) Executive Director Janice Weinman announced today that Alfredo Hernandez, a music teacher at All Hallows High School in the Bronx, has been named the 2023 ETM Music Teacher of the Year. Mr. Hernandez works at All Hallows High School through their partnership with Education Through Music, the premier New York City music non-profit organization.

All Hallows High School did not have a music teacher for several decades until they partnered with ETM. Mr. Hernandez joined the school in 2021 and quickly built a comprehensive music program impacting all students. Mr. Hernandez serves as the All Hallows’ Music Technology teacher as well as the Director of the All Hallows’ Modern Band. Through the music programs that he created, Mr. Hernandez has taught students who have never played an instrument, and he has inspired them to find their
musical talents. The All Hallows’ Modern Band performed at Josh Groban’s Find Your Light Gala this past April and they have been invited to perform the national anthem at a Yankees game on June 7, 2023.

“I was born and raised in New York City and I went through the public school system,” said Mr. Hernandez. “I know what it means to have a quality music education program, and I hope to provide  that for generations to come.

As a Brooklyn native who was molded by his music programs in the New York City public school system, Mr. Hernandez sees himself in his students and inspires them through engaging music classes. In 2020, Mr. Hernandez was named NY1’s New Yorker of the Week for his achievements, creativity and ability to keep students engaged in music in spite of the Covid pandemic.

“We are thrilled that we have so many wonderful music teachers that are back to in person instruction after two challenging pandemic-influenced school years,” said Dr. Janice Weinman, CEO of ETM. “Alfredo represents a shining example of the impact of music teachers on children throughout the city. We are proud to present our annual award to him.”

ETM believes that every child, at every school, deserves access to high quality music education as part of the core curriculum. Music education is part of a well-rounded academic program and essential for student’s social and emotional well-being.
